July 13 is Embrace Your Geekness Day. It is a designated 24-hour window to celebrate the things you are frankly a little too into. The rabbit holes. The spreadsheets. The "let me tell you about this one thing" conversations that actively make people’s eyes glaze over.
We’re leaning in. Mostly because we don't know how to turn it off.
At YellowWebMonkey, we build websites. But what we really do is obsess over backend details that 99% of humanity will never notice. It is the stuff that separates a website that actually makes money from one that just sits there looking pretty.
Here is what we geek out over, and why it actually matters for your business.
Page Speed (Yes, Milliseconds Matter)
We will happily spend an unreasonable amount of time shaving 200 milliseconds off your page load time. It is a terrible way to start a conversation at a wedding, but a fantastic way to run a business.
Why? Because human beings have zero patience.
Google treats page speed as a major ranking factor, and users treat slow websites like a personal insult. The average person expects a page to load in under 3 seconds. Every single second after that, you are essentially asking your traffic to leave. Studies show conversion rates drop roughly 7% for every additional second of load time.
So yes, we care deeply about image compression. We care about lazy loading. We care about which clunky apps are adding unnecessary bloat to your Shopify store.
Milliseconds matter. We will gladly die on that hill. (It will be a very fast hill.)
Accessibility (The Right Way to Build)
Accessibility isn’t a trendy checklist item. It is how websites should have been built in the first place, unless you actively enjoy alienating users and inviting legal drama.
Screen readers, keyboard navigation, color contrast, alt text, focus states, and form labels are not "nice-to-haves." They determine whether millions of people with disabilities can actually use your site. Beyond the ethical reality, there is a legal one: accessibility lawsuits are rising, particularly in e-commerce.
We get genuinely excited when a site passes a WCAG accessibility audit with flying colors.
One of our clients, Cheri Owen of Hearing the Light, is a blind Air Force veteran who creates tactile ceramics. Building an accessible site for her wasn’t an optional feature; it was the entire point. That project reinforced what we already knew: making websites accessible for everyone just makes them better websites, period.
Clean Code (Because Someone Has to Maintain This)
Here is a confession: we absolutely judge websites by their source code.
Messy code works until it doesn't. Usually, it breaks right when you need to make an urgent change and nobody can figure out what the original developer was thinking. Suddenly, you are paying someone to untangle a digital ball of yarn instead of building new features.
Clean code is readable, documented, and written with the assumption that future you (or another developer) will need to understand it later without suffering a headache.
This isn't glamorous work, but it is the difference between an asset and a liability.
Schema Markup (The Invisible SEO Layer)
Schema markup is structured data that helps search engines understand what your content actually means. It is the reason some search results show star ratings, prices, FAQs, or event dates right on the Google results page.
Most people have never heard of it. We think about it constantly.
Proper schema is an invisible layer that yields highly visible results, pulling in more clicks for e-commerce, local businesses, and informational sites alike. We check Google’s Rich Results Test more often than is probably healthy. Our team is working on it.
Typography and Spacing (The Stuff You Feel But Don't See)
Good typography is invisible. Bad typography is an eyesore.
Line height, letter spacing, font pairing, and visual hierarchy determine whether your content is easy to digest or physically exhausting to read. We have incredibly strong, passionate opinions about system fonts versus custom fonts, button padding, and whitespace. Opinions that would bore a regular person to tears.
Most visitors won't consciously notice that your padding is perfectly balanced. But they will feel it. A clean, spacious site builds immediate trust. A cramped, chaotic site makes people hit the back button.
The Checkout Flow (Where Money Gets Made or Lost)
For e-commerce sites, the checkout is where dreams go to live or die. You can have the best products and the most brilliant marketing, but if your checkout is confusing, your revenue drops to zero.
We obsess over checkout friction.
- How many steps does it take?
- Are you asking for their childhood pet's name just to ship a t-shirt?
- Are the form fields clear on mobile?
- Are unexpected costs popping up at the last second?
We test checkouts like we are actually buying the items, which occasionally panics our accounting department. But it is the only way to catch the friction points before your customers do.
Why This Matters for You
None of this is magic. It is just an intense attention to detail, applied consistently by people who genuinely care about the digital plumbing.
The businesses that win online aren't always the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones with websites that just work. Sites that load fast, rank well, convert visitors, and don't break when you look at them sideways.
That takes a certain kind of obsession. Call it geeky—we will take it as a compliment.
Happy Embrace Your Geekness Day.
