Monitoring Your Tax Liability (Before It Becomes a Problem)
Shopify Tax doesn't just calculate tax – it also watches your sales like a hawk and tells you when you're getting close to triggering obligations in new states. Think of it as an early warning system, except instead of alerting you to incoming missiles, it's alerting you to incoming tax paperwork.
To check your current tax liability status:
- Go to Settings → Taxes and Duties
- If you're out of compliance, you'll see a box that says "Your store is out of compliance with state sales tax laws" (subtle, right?)
-
Click View States to see where you have nexus
- Otherwise, click United States in the Manage sales tax collection section to review all states

This dashboard shows you:
- States where you're already required to collect tax
- States where you're approaching thresholds (the "get ready" zone)
- States where you're safely under thresholds (enjoy this while it lasts)
Starting Tax Collection in a State
Once you've confirmed that you have nexus in a state, it's time to start collecting. You don't need a tax ID number to begin collection in Shopify (you can add it later), but you will eventually need one to actually file and remit taxes to the state.
The Quick Way: Collect Everywhere You're Liable
- Go to Settings → Taxes and Duties → United States
-
In the Manage tax collection section, click Show all liabilities
- In the upper right corner, click Collect where liable

Boom. You're now collecting sales tax in every state where you've exceeded thresholds. That was almost too easy, right?
The Selective Way: Turn On Collection State-by-State
- Navigate to Settings → Taxes and Duties → United States
- Under Manage tax collection, select Show all liabilities
- Find the specific state and click Start collecting taxes
- If you have a tax ID number ready, enter it. If not, don't worry – you can come back and add it later
Here's where you are right now: You understand the economic nexus. You've activated Shopify Tax. You know how to monitor your liability and start collecting in any state where you've exceeded thresholds.
But knowledge without action doesn't keep you compliant.
What you need next is a concrete, real-world example that walks you through the complete process from start to finish: registering with a state, configuring your tax rates, categorizing your products correctly, and actually filing your taxes.
→ Continue to Part 3: The Virginia Deep Dive – Registration, Rates, and Filing where we'll walk through a complete real-world example using Virginia. You'll see exactly how to register for a tax ID, configure state-specific rates, nail your product categorization (this is critical!), and generate the reports you need for filing.
Think of Part 3 as your hands-on tutorial. We're done with theory – it's time to see how this actually works in practice.
